Blueberries... you win some and you loose some....Local blueberry plants on sale

Ok quick post on blueberries....First thing first... anyone who is local,  Brockfarm has all their fruit trees on sale 50% off... they have  a pretty large number of blueberry bushes left.... some as cheap as $6.50. I got this pink lemonade variety (pictured above) and a bluecrop. If you do decide to buy one remember to acidify your soil and most varieties need to be grown as pairs (of two diff species) to ensure cross pollination.

Anyhow... thanks to the bird netting we are really enjoying our blueberries this year. I had one plant die (a duke). I think it died because the start of the summer was very hot and I hadn't kept up with watering as I well as I should have (I was trying a water once- a- week but very deeply schedule). Hopefully it will recover next year, we'll see. (NOTE: blueberries have rather shallow roots so looks like they need more consistent watering)

However my Herbert blueberry bush did wonderfully and is producing the best berries... this weekend we got a handful of berries each day out of this one bush. They say you should aim for 5 fruiting bushes for a family of four. Hopefully next year my younger bushes will start fruiting and with these two new ones I just bought I should have at least 3-4 that are fruiting.
