Story of a tomato
She was grown in the dead of winter.
She was grown in New Jersey.
She was picked this morning.
I know that she was treated with a organic treatment to keep away blight. The greenhouse she was grown in was kept warm 24 hrs a day with wood from fallen trees from Hurricane Sandy.
(The farmer was regularly up at 3AM putting more woodchips in the furnace which kept it warm)
This photo hasn't been altered, photoshopped, etc... she really is that red.
She smells every bit as good as she looks.
She tastes every bit as good as she smells.
For those that don't know much about growing tomatoes they really need temperatures which remain above 55 degrees Fahrenheit at night and even warmer during the day for more than ~80 day(something like that). The last two winters the farmer at my CSA has been trying to grow jersey tomatoes... yes you read correctly tomatoes in the winter. However for the second year in a row I only got a few tomatoes during the winter itself. Last year he made up for the lack of winter tomatoes with "early tomatoes" which meant I was getting Jersey fresh tomatoes at the beginning of June (maybe even end of May, I can't remember). Last year was great I didn't have to buy a single tomato from the grocery store from June till about November. I'm hoping to be able to do the same thing this year.
This year my goal is to can my own tomatoes so that I don't need to buy the canned tomatoes from the store. Usually I end up buying canned tomatoes during the winter. Lets see if I can make this happen.
